How to Replace the Timing Chain on Your Motorcycle

Check for Issues Before Replacing the Timing Chain

Before jumping into a timing chain replacement, make sure the problem really lies with the timing chain itself—not just a weak Lift Adjuster Tensioner (LAT).

1. Identify Engine Noise

If you hear a repetitive “tek…tek…tek” noise from the engine, it could be due to a loose timing chain. However, the same noise can also result from a faulty tensioner that isn’t functioning correctly.

2. Inspect the LAT (Lift Adjuster Tensioner)

• Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the LAT cover bolt.
• Use a flathead screwdriver to adjust the LAT pusher to its deepest position (counterclockwise).
• If the tensioner spring doesn’t push back, it might need further inspection or replacement.
• Reinstall the LAT cover, start the engine, and listen for any remaining rough sounds.

If the sound persists, there’s a good chance that the timing chain needs replacing.

How to Replace the Timing Chain

Here are the proper steps to safely and effectively replace your motorcycle’s timing chain—especially for Honda Tiger owners.

1. Initial Preparation

• Remove the starter dynamo to provide working space.
• Prepare the tools: Allen keys, 8mm wrench, magnet puller, and screwdriver.

2. Remove the LAT Components

• Unscrew the two LAT bolts using a 5mm Allen key and take them out from the engine.

3. Open the Timing Chain Cover

• Remove the two timing chain cover bolts using an 8mm wrench.
• Locate the engine’s top dead center (TDC) before proceeding (this is essential for proper timing).

4. Disassemble the Sprockets and Engine Block

• Unscrew the two bolts on the timing chain sprocket.
• Remove all bolts on the left side of the engine block.

5. Remove and Replace the Timing Chain

• Use a magnet puller to remove the engine’s magnet.
• Take out the old timing chain and install a new one.
• Make sure the TDC alignment is correct on both the camshaft gear and crankshaft gear.

6. Reinstall All Components

• Reinstall the magnet and all previously removed parts.
• Tighten all bolts, start the engine, and listen for any abnormal sounds.
